It’s all Heidegger’s fault

April 19, 2005

“Apart from insanity and vulgar crudity what can begin a war?” Tom asks, I mention lively gestures of Adolf talking for immense crowds. “Well, tell me what it means, somebody was talking about German abstract romanticism.”
I have a ready answer: “Single motif for two world wars.”

I’m outta here.

Pictured

April 9, 2005

This time I am sitting in the class which has large windows to the blue sky and everybody passing by the quad can sneak in. There are some tourists in suits passing by, a woman stops at the window and announces her discovery in an unknown language to other colleagues, they all gather to watch these college kids sitting in a live class, looking blankly at the “Implicit Function Theorem” on the blackboard. Other guys in the class have noticed the avid observers around who are watching from the windows eagerly but poor teacher tries to concentrate and elaborate on the theorem, I guess what might happen, and yes; horrible. All of a sudden the boy in front of me announces loudly: oho, she is taking a picture! Her camera flashes in the class, nobody laughs, it is just too uneasy. Nothing is more absurd than being framed in a photo album in a land far from yourself, with people looking and pointing talking in an un-identifiable language, laughing at the frightened boy with his hand frozen in the air showing the camera capturing him. Baffled expression. Caught puzzled in glory.

La Mondialisation

French backlash to the Americanization and English language smells like chauvinism, I tend to regard some of their reactions too much and I’m not that optimistic about Francophone empire hereafter, but anyway
