Heavenly Bodies

June 25, 2004

Another smoking break, Tom in a new gesture, one foot on the ground, one in the air; opposite hand to the front, the other one to the rear. “What was the name of this statue? What was that I do not remember!” I have seen sth like this on top of a cathedral or sth. John says it is Hermes, with the wings on his feet. Tom says: “Yes, right; Mercury. Interesting Romans assimilated Greek rituals. Good that they named planets, otherwise now we had ‘Bush’ instead of ‘Mars’.” I said: ” Nice allegory, you know Mars was the god of war.” Long and loud laughs follow.

New Jerusalem

June 23, 2004

New York City is the New Jerusalem.
He sinks in the subway entrance in uptown Broadway and goes down the stairs to the people waiting. When the train roars noisily along the dark mazes, the big guy beside him apparently shivers and moves his hands in a hysteric way. He might be so afraid of getting caught in the middle of a dark tunnel or getting killed in a crash. The kid in the other side is talking Spanish, the girl beside him is looking curiously, the guy in the left is looking at her in the same way. He climbs stairs quickly and gets out of Hades territory. Scrupulous to get the right way, gets to a cozy corner in a coffeshop at union square trying to identify the usual customers. Sweaty and tired watches the two guys and one girl looking and laughing. He remembered what had read last night on a giant billboard. Among all those flashes sth said:
eats flies
dates a pig
Hollywood star
live your dream
pass it on
He is so tired now to try pigs, but it is easy to go with flies. He changes the seat where he can see the sun pulling out of ultimate city. Every day as he walks fifth ave to the south and eats his pizza at noon and watches the employees all at lines in front of the federal buildings to smoke their boredom away, he looks at all those Babylon towers and wonders how these new Babylonians didn’t fail to finish the towers, the answer might be they didn’t need talking to fulfill their ambitions. Dali might have seen the young city offshore to come to believe about the place of human ‘s re-incarnation. At home he knows somebody is watching him in binoculars. He has thought of simple ways to look more attractive and considerate for all of them..

Vincent

Nothing on a flat surface can transfer all strength of life and suffer and crude sensation in a Van Gogh piece of art. In first glance at one of his works I was trapped by his maniac moves of brush, crying sth too alive to last long. His thick and 3 dimensional manner of putting fleshy chunks of paint is nothing can be seen in a flat soulless piece of paper. I imagined of the lunatic artist whose art was never a relief for he himself. Years after he left the world which molded its lively and colorful sufferings in his works, voluntarily; Othes spent million and millions for the mute tears.
It would do no good to the wounded creator, but Vincent’s moments are to be seen forever.

Maxwell’s Demon

June 23, 2004

From “The Crying of Lot 49” by Thomas Pynchon:
“… He began then bewilderingly, to talk about something called entropy. The word bothered him as much as ‘Trystero’ bothered Oedipa. But it was too technical for her. She did gather that there were two distinct kinds of this entropy . One having to do with heat-engines, the other to do with communication. The equation for one, back in the ’30s’, had looked very like the equation for the other. It was a coincidence. The two fields were entirely unconnected, except at one point: Maxwell’s Demon. As the Demon sat and sorted his molecules into hot and cold, the system was said to lose entropy. But somehow the loss was offset by the information the Demon gained about the molecules were where…”
Professor “Nefastis” who explains these facts to “Oedipa” is a reclusive UC Berkeley faculty who tempts her to his apartment. Oedipa escapes his plot.

Fighting looks natural in an unbelievable way. The first thing comes to mind for challenging a rival is to punch him in the mouth. Isn’t that strange civilized nations use these natural methods to prove themselves? Killing enemies does not prove anything. You do not want to talk with anybody who does not respect your reasoning. But do you clean earth from his existence just because you are feeling he is wrong? How can war be preached by the first liners of human dignity?
